With Christmas only a few days away, our hardworking balikbayans have started to stream in from all parts of the world, pasalubong in hand, excited for the week or two that they will be spending with their loved ones during the biggest holiday of the year – holding their children, kissing their significant other, and laughing along with the rest of the family as they go through all their favorite videoke songs.
As is custom – usually a few day before or after Christmas – a family feast at a popular restaurant chain is in order along with a big shopping spree afterwards, and if you’re one of those balikbayans that reside in the south, Tony Roma’s at the Alabang Town Center might be a place you would want to consider. Not only do they have finger-licking platters of food to share, but the international franchise offers a special discount voucher for the holidays (see below) and their Ribvolution card, allowing for big discounts for family feasts.
Whet your appetite with Tony Roma’s Appetizer Sampler (Php 675) that has a trio of their best sellers – jumbo Fire Wings dipped in a spicy BBQ sauce and served with a Bleu cheese dressing; Potato Skins that have been baked, scooped out, and stuffed with Mozzarella and Cheddar cheeses, bacon, with a side of sour cream; and stringy Mozzarella Sticks served with a zesty marinara sauce.
A rather pretty appetizer that would go really well with a tall glass of beer is their Onion Loaf (Half Loaf – Php 329, Full Loaf – Php 485) made with giant hand-cut onions that have been breaded, deep fried, and served with their Original BBQ sauce. You cannot stop popping this in your mouth once you start until there’s nothing left but crumbs.
For something mildly spicy, one may want to try Tony Roma’s huge plate of Cajun Chicken Pasta (Lunch – Php 525, Dinner Php 795), put together with grilled chicken breast, special sausage, mushrooms, onions, and red and green bell peppers tossed in a spicy Asiago cream sauce and served over linguine. This is really filling, with the generous chunks of chicken and heavy cream.
A part of Tony Roma’s secret menu (at least in the Alabang branch) is the Steak & Mushroom Flatbread, a crisp flatbread topped with grilled, all natural beef tenderloin, melted Havarti cheese, crumbled bleu cheese, mushrooms, red peppers, and chives with a creamy horseradish sauce on the side. This always goes well with the children, but the adults at the table can polish this off pretty fast, too!
The Grilled Spinach Chicken Stack (Php 620) is like an appetizer and an entrée all rolled into one. Two stacked, all-natural chicken breasts straight from the open grill are covered with a rich blend of three cheeses, artichoke hearts and creamy spinach. This dish is served with two choices of sides: coleslaw, French fries, baked potato, rice, Ranch style beans, mixed vegetables, or corn on the cob. Yum!
As Tony Roma’s is known worldwide for their succulent, finger-licking ribs, it makes sense to order a slab when feasting at the establishment with your fambam. If you can’t decide which rib flavor to try the Star-Studded Sampler (Php 1,285) lets you try all three: Carolina Honeys™, a mellow blend of real honey and molasses, Red Hots, and Blue Ridge Smokies™, a smokey flavored sauce with real molasses.
For balikbayans (and non-balikbayans alike) who just want to simplify their life and order a whole lot of food for the family to tuck into, there’s The Roma Feast (Php 1,695) – a huge platter of Carolina Honeys ribs, half a BBQ Chicken, grilled sausages, corn on the cob and coleslaw. This can feed two hungry parents and their two kids by my guesstimate.
Nothing beats the combination of hot, cold, and sweet for dessert, as evidenced by one Tony Roma’s best-selling desserts. Take their Apple Crisp (Php 360), tangy Jonathan apples baked with a yummy crumb topping and covered in vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. Popular among the chocoholics is the Skillet Cookie Sundae (Php 400), a giant, chewy chocolate chip topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and chocolate fudge.
